🐙 AI is in business — I caught up with Andrew Ng

A conversation from the front line of AI implementation

Since ChatGPT was released a year ago, organisations across the world have been grappling with the rise of generative AI. What have they learnt, and what are their most common mistakes? Are we at an inflection point in the AI revolution, and how can regulation support its development?

To answer these questions, I caught up with Andrew Ng, a leading computer scientist and entrepreneur in the space. Andrew’s accomplishments are many. He is the founder of DeepLearning.ai, founder & CEO of Landing AI, GP at AI Fund, chairman and co-founder of Coursera, and an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University’s Computer Science Department. He was also the founding lead of the Google Brain team and Chief Scientist at Baidu. Andrew and I first spoke in 2019, and you can listen to that conversation here.

Our conversation from earlier this week is packed with insights from the front lines of AI implementation. We cover…

  • 🤔 The most common mistake organisations make when implementing AI,

  • 🏗️ Why innovation in the application layer of AI is crucial to the health of the ecosystem and its financing,

  • 🎯 What is the next frontier of AI development,

  • 🧠 Where the concept of AGI is useful, and where it’s not,

  • 🧨 How regulating the applications of generative AI is better than focusing on foundation models,

  • ✨ Are we better off with more intelligence in the world?

Azeem Azhar (00:00.413)1: I'm very, very excited for the conversation we are about to have. I'll be talking to someone who's been at the forefront of artificial intelligence research, the forefront of education and the forefront of commercialization of these technologies for several years. An accomplished researcher who built AI organizations in both Google and Baidu. He also founded the world's most important, massive open online course provider Coursera. And for the past several years, he's been helping companies come to grips with deep learning. Andrew Ng, it's wonderful to have you back on the show.

Andrew Ng (00:56.162) Thanks, Azeem. I’ve been a fan of your work for many years. It's great to be back.
