🔮 AI & the future of media

With Nick Thompson (CEO, The Atlantic)

The media business has never been easy, but we may now be living through one of its most volatile periods. When I sat down with my friend

earlier today, we explored four tectonic shifts reshaping the landscape:

  • The collapse of search,

  • The rise of sovereign creators,

  • The fragility of trust,

  • The promise of AI as collaborator.

We touched on the ethics of editorial independence in an era of investor-backed punditry, discussed Substack’s rise and its powerful network effects, and debated whether AI–media regulation should be market-driven or guided by economic theory.

Nick also shared a deeply personal story of how he shaved fourteen minutes off his marathon time by unlocking a psychological barrier he’d built after surviving cancer. He tells it in full in his forthcoming book, The Running Ground, out in October.

Thank you to everyone who joined us live. If you found this conversation valuable, share it with someone who cares and follow Nick on Substack.

Have a great weekend,
Azeem
