AI CEOs are listening, but is that enough?

In the past week, I engaged in a compelling discussion with Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, as a part of his global listening tour. Our conversation will be released as the first episode of my new TV series Exponentially, which will be coming to your screens in July.

In addition to chatting with Sam, I’ve spoken with the founders of Cohere, Anthropic, and Stability, as well as with AI honchos at Meta and Microsoft.

I started my career nearly 30 years ago. I’ve met senior execs in pretty much every industry in that time. I can’t remember ever coming across an industry sector where leaders were prima facie as enthusiastic about introducing regulation to their sector as AI executives do today. These chaps are travelling the world highlighting what they perceive are the risks and challenges inherent to their products and technologies. It starkly contrasts with the somewhat passive stance adopted by the heads of automotive companies, banks, pharmaceuticals, and indeed, tech firms like Uber in the past.

That, I think, is a positive development. However, the question inevitably arises: how will these leaders react when the rubber hits the road?
