Open thread #6: AI now has an IQ of 120. Does it matter?

OpenAI’s o1 model may be quite smart.
put it through its paces on an unseen IQ test. It rocked in at 120. One-and-a-third standard deviations above the mean would put it above 95% of humans.Let’s assume this is a correct and replicable result. We should also recognise that, in humans, while strong relationships exist between IQ and educational and professional outcomes, personal and social factors substantially influence life outcomes.
Caveats aside, IQ scores can tell us something. And o1 seems to do quite well. Anecdote suggests it might be better than that. Renowned (poly)mathematician Terence Tao considers o1 to be “on a par with…a mediocre, but not completely incompetent, graduate student.”
