GPT-4 attains a form of general intelligence, indeed showing sparks of artificial general intelligence. This is demonstrated by its core mental capabilities (such as reasoning, creativity, and deduction), its range of topics on which it has gained expertise (such as literature, medicine, and coding), and the variety of tasks it is able to perform
So starts a recent (last night) preprint from Microsoft researchers who had early access to GPT-4: Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence: Early Experiments with GPT-4.
The paper is 149 pages long and I’d only been awake six hours since it dropped, so I can’t confess to having read, let alone analysed it all. But I’ve spent some time on it, and I have a few key observations worth considering.
