The election of Lula as President of Brazil might herald some healing for the rainforests of the Amazon. Although deforestation in the 1990s was more than twice as aggressive as today, Bolsanaro increased the chopping by 75% in his first three years as president. In his previous eight years in office, Lula hacked deforestation rates by more than 72%.
