Unicorns on the move
It has been a dizzying year for AI startups. For the fourth consecutive quarter, AI startups have hit a global funding record. The sector is seeing 200% funding growth compared with 2020 as new companies focused on healthcare, fintech, and retail have driven a record number of $100m+ mega funding rounds. AI is taking off. I discuss this in the latest podcast with Ian Hogarth and Nathan Benaich, authors behind the State of AI report. The episode will be out today, subscribe to get it in your podcast feed. Bigger and biggerer
In the three to four years since the first transformer models arrived (which are great for natural language processing), they have got exponentially more complex. The Megatron-Turing model has around 5,000 times more parameters than the 2018 ELMo. With that comes a greater ability to generalise, at a higher data and computational cost. Via Markettechpost
AI needs space
A curious consequence of the rise in AI startups is a boom in laboratories. This isn’t limited to AI startups but they play a big role. The property boom is apparent in healthcare-related companies and is helping to lift property valuations in many major US cities. Via The Economist
