Azeem your analysis has aged rather well over the last couple of months! Looking at these topics from a macro level, it would seem China is in a much stronger position to bring its economy back into a more normal operation than we will be in Europe, the US, or for that matter, in most other places. However, Leviathan-like powers do not seem like enough (perhaps Russia is a good example of where they haven't worked?). It seems like it needs to be combined with the willingness of the people and technological infrastructure and capabilities for it to work effectively. China has been able to martial all three, while many western countries are arguing over how to do it, and don't necessarily have the willingness of the people (see the US and some European countries) and, of course, the many other countries that don't have the technological infrastructure and capabilities. As a consequence, and knowing what we know now about how long it is likely to take for the most countries to recover some sense of normality, it looks like China, with all of its measures, will be able to power ahead and overcome other countries on many fronts, while the other countries are left grappling with the open up vs risk lives equation. I've been asking myself whether this means the west is giving up long term financial and political strength as well as its values because it is having difficulty in making their current systems work in the context of this new reality, whilst China seems to be perfectly able to make their system work and even thrive (antifragile?). At least that's the perception I have now. Any comments?

Like this analysis. Elevating to the geopolitical level and tantalising with questions about is China going to recover quite happily and US left in a mess. I can't see how there isn't huge economic carnage in the West that governments struggle to spend our way out of because the costs are so enormous. But today's stock markets going up even before US is in full lockdown shows I mustn't be well enough informed.
