Vaclav Smil is a distinguished professor emeritus at the Faculty for Environment at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. He is considered one of the leading thinkers on energy, its history, development, and the future. Vaclav's research spans environmental and population change, food production and nutrition, as well as technical innovation, all of which he's captured in more than thirty books and 500 papers. Bill Gates is one of his biggest fans, admitting that he waits for the new Smil book the way some people wait for the next Star Wars movie. Vaclav's latest book Growth: From Microorganisms to Megacities is a systematic exploration of growth in societies and in nature.
