I like to think of public opinion as a gas exhibiting pedesis and normally it applies pressure relatively evenly in all directions. But I feel that the lockdowns have cooled selfish day to day motivations and condensed the public sentiment into a form that makes it a more solid force; this might only last a short time, but no PR dept. wants to get on the wrong side of such an undistracted crowd. This might be the first of many topics that corporations actively distance themselves from in the near future.

There is a broader reflection to be made - beyond facial recognition which is perhaps the tip of the iceberg - on any and all applications of AI in policing and criminal justice. You will recall that there are cases where AI might seem like it would help in decision making, if it were not for the fact that it fails, and this happens regardless of which specific algorithm you apply (https://www.technologyreview.com/2019/10/17/75285/ai-fairer-than-judge-criminal-risk-assessment-algorithm/). Two years ago, the European Commission convened experts from civil society as well as companies, who developed and published in 2019 principles and guidelines for a trustworthy use of AI (https://ec.europa.eu/futurium/en/ai-alliance-consultation/guidelines). Some of the guidelines (fairness, accountability, human agency and oversight) seem particularly relevant to the matter at hand. Then the Commission changed, and now it has its hands full with other tasks. But I have not lost hope that these guidelines can be implemented into some form of EU law.
