Our next event is a private panel discussion on "Democracy and the Role of Big Data in Politics" held on Wednesday 24th May from 6.30 to 8.30pm.
We are delighted to have the following guests on the panel:
Carole Cadwalladr - Author, Journalist
Hari Kunzru - Author, Journalist
Luciano Floridi - Professor of Philosophy and Ethics of Information at the Oxford Internet Institute
Tom Loosemore - Group Director of Digital Services, The Co-Operative and previously founder of the UK's Government Digital Service, part of the Cabinet Office
Some of the topics that we are going to discuss will be as follows:
- What happened with the Trump and Brexit campaigns that was new and different?
- Why are we worried? Is big data innovation endangering democracy more than previous political machinations and strategies of influence? Are there real, material differences? E.g. the key differences between online political adverting versus traditional adverting?
- What does this mean for people/voters? What impact will it have on identity politics and tribalism? Can the people hack back?
- What’s the future? (More) distorted reality? A radical change in western democratic values? What must we do to check and balance our infosphere technologies? What ethical and regulatory flags do we need to raise?
The event will be held in a central London location and drinks will be provided. Tickets are £15.
